On Saturday, Joey Chestnut did the impossible (again), downing 75 hotdogs in 12 minutes in the Nathan’s Hotdog Eating Competition. You’re not as built for speed, so your 75 dogs were spaced out over the entire long weekend, but chances are, you’re not feeling too too hot on this Monday morning.

The Fig Chronicles

Figs are a very under-appreciated health powerhouse and a great way to break out of the apple/banana/orange fruit monotony. They're an excellent source of dietary fiber and mineral manganese, and a powerful tool to help prevent Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and other neurological diseases.

They have incredible anti-aging properties, have been shown to effectively treat acne in many cases, and are a staple for women during pregnancy.

Figs can compliment some really great dishes, as their complex taste profile ranges from sweet to acidic to nutty if seeds are in high numbers. Here’s a list of recipes that use figs to heighten the overall flavors of the dish.

Barbecue Bean Tacos

FRising meat prices have driven more and more people towards meatless, plant based alternatives. Beans remain a solid vegetarian source of protein, so here's a quick (less than 30 minutes) take on your classic taco.

Overall it’s a pretty bright and light meal that won’t leave you feeling like cement. The acid from the pineapple strikes a nice balance with the creaminess and earthiness of the pinto beans. We'd recommend pinto over black beans in the tacos. Check out the full recipe here.

How long should I be warming up for?

There's probably not a universal gold standard for warmup length - I think length of warm-up is also very dependent on the person and the activity involved. Warming up for a powerlifting meet might take a little longer than warming up for a 2-mile jog.

Generally speaking, I like to see people target foam-rolling/mobility work, muscle activation (glute, core, and back muscles are key), and some type of activity that will increase heart rate and blood flow before jumping into intense movements. Before a heavy lifting session, this might include working at lighter weights (30-70% intensity). Before a run, this might include dynamic stretches or strides.

The key is to have a routine and stick to it. Your warm-up might be 5-10 minutes, but don't ever skip it completely.
